Tomato juice fights breast cancer

tomato juice prevents breast cancerTomato, although technically a fruit, is used more as a vegetable by people. The juice of tomato is highly recommended for people with various ailments and even for healthy people. Lycopene, an antioxidant is a part of almost all vegetables and fruits, but is found in large quantities in tomato. Experts have long recommended tomatoes for several kinds of medical conditions, including heart problems and muscular degeneration.
However, most of all, tomatoes are highly recommended in treatment of almost any type of cancer, particularly breast cancer. It helps neutralize free radicals of cancer cells and hence considered to be a significant aid in cancer treatments. Apart from this, even healthy individuals can benefit from the lycopene content in tomatoes, as it considerably reduces chances of getting cancer and heart diseases.
Lycopene reacts with all toxins in the body and purges. Lycopene is also found to reduce incidents of prostate cancer and atherosclerosis and coronary disease. Moreover, several studies have revealed that tomatoes contain enzymes that prevent blood clotting, and this helps people who are prone to getting a stroke.
It is said that cooked tomatoes, rather than eating them fresh out of garden, can double the effect of lycopene. This is the reason that the study focuses on tomato juice, rather than raw tomatoes. The other good ways to consume tomatoes are in the form of tomato sauce (says another study from Ohio University), as there are 2 separate strings of lycopene molecule in the tomato sauce. Another good way is to mix tomato with corn or corn oil, as this combination releases the largest amount of lycopene.
Health expert, Dr. Enaam Abdul Razag of Supreme Heal Council -Maternity Section, Doha, mentioned that fresh tomatoes can reduce incidence of breast cancer by 77 percent, while also confirming that a healthy, balanced diet goes a long way in preventing the disease.
All meals should essentially contain fresh veggies, particularly tomatoes, lettuce and carrots as they play a vital role in preventing breast cancer. Even fruits such as cherries, oranges and strawberries help in preventing breast cancer, Dr. Razag said.
Other health benefits of tomato: Apart from cancer preventing properties, the lycopene content in tomato helps improve blood circulation, lowering blood pressure. Raw tomato juice is a good source of potassium, the deficiency of which could cause general weakness and malaise.
Tomato juice, when mixed with spinach juice and consumed, help in activating a sluggish liver, while also preventing constipation. But, tomato juice is not recommended for people with gallbladder disease.

As suggested by Experts, try to purchase organic or locally grown tomatoes. Most other tomatoes have been genetically modified, and even if they are rich in lycopene.

Nannari – a wonder herb that safeguards from common summer ailments

The herb ‘Sarasaparilla’, better known as ‘Nannari’ is a wonder herb which would come in handy during summer, with its cooling medicinal property of protecting one from common summer ailments.

Our ancestors used to drink a mixture of extracts from ‘Nannari’ roots, adding a tint of lime juice and palm sugar (panamkalkandam) to keep them cool during summer. However, the palm sugar was replaced with white sugar, and in course of time, people were drawn towards other attractive alternatives, says Nagarajan, the Managing Partner of a 100 year old, Sherbet company.

Being a natural coolant, ‘Nannari’ is grown in cool places. The exposed part of the root is brown in colour, while the inner part is whitish. The root has an astringent taste and a pleasant odour. The herb is found in foothills and only the roots of the herb are used for extraction.

Nagarajan explains that ‘Nannari’ roots have the medicinal quality of providing relief from constipation, and acidity, while also purifying blood.

Nagarajan reveals that the ‘Nannari’ extract is prepared from its roots through steam distillation, after which, it is mixed with citric acid, water and sugar, in certain proportions, to constitute the ‘Nannari’ concentrate or syrup. About 50ml of this syrup is diluted with 145ml of cold water and 5 ml of fresh lime juice, to make 200 ml of delicious sherbet.

Dr. Varadarajan, being a Sidha doctor himself, after conducting an extensive research on medicinal herbs, particularly the ‘nannari’ roots, reveals that the herbal mixture has no side-effects, as it acts as a diaphoretic. It is used as a demulcent to relieve body pain, and helps in keeping the body cool. It is also a diuretic, and helps in toning urinary system, while also preventing stone formation. It also controls tonsillitis.

During peak summer, one and all can enjoy the ‘nannari’ drink early in the morning before breakfast, ideally once a day, while thrice a day is also permissible, says Dr. Varadarajan.

Egyptians find torture tools in secret police raid

By Barbara Miller(www.abc.net.au)

Egyptian pro-democracy supporters gather in Tahrir Square

Thousands of Egyptian pro-democracy supporters gather in Tahrir Square in Cairo February 18, 2011

Protesters in Egypt have stormed several locked offices belonging to the former regime's secret police and say the documents they found contain evidence of phone-tapping, election-rigging and torture.

With a new cabinet in the making and former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak gone, activists took their anger out on the country's secret police on the weekend, taking over several of its buildings in Cairo and Alexandria.

The Mubarak regime used the secret police to torture opponents and monitor any resistance within the population.

The military council, which has ruled Egypt since Mr Mubarak stepped down, warned against releasing the documents, citing national security concerns.

But protesters say what they found shows the state security apparatus must be dissolved.

"State security has never served to protect this state's security. It's real function was to protect the regime. The state security was never there to protect us. All they did was set their thugs on us and spy on us," one protester said.

"We want it dissolved and turned into an information gathering authority, nothing more. We don't need them to torture people and label them terrorists," said another.

When the demonstrators broke into the offices, they say what they found confirmed their worst fears.

"We found torture tools. Basically in one of the rooms we found a number of electric shocks. It is not the usual electric shock that we used to see with some of these officers," a third protester said.

"This time it was a bit long, it was black. The electric rods at the end of it were a bit like the teeth of some animal or something.

"It was really outstanding and if you turn it on there is a blue type of a spark that starts working and former detainees showed us how it actually, how it was used on them.

"Another torture tool was basically a cube-like frame made of rods and sticks attached to it and there is an electricity charger attached to this structure with some electricity plugs.

"There are a number of ways that detainees used to be tortured using this device. The thing was so scary, some people started crying after seeing all this."

He says the documents contained evidence that the secret police spied upon and manipulated almost every aspect of daily life in Egypt during Mr Mubarak's three decades in power.

"We found also plans for rigging the elections, the parliamentary elections in 2010," he said.

"Exact plans telling how many votes will go to each candidate in every district in the country and how the state security and some state security agents working in the media are going to support certain candidates."

Knife-wielding men

Meanwhile, as demonstrations continue outside a state security building in the capital, some of those involved say they have been set upon by men in plain clothes wielding knives.

It is the first time since the fall of Mr Mubarak last month that there have been reports of a violent crackdown on protesters.

It does not bode well for Egypt's new prime minister, Essam Sharaf, who is currently trying to put together a cabinet more palatable to the opposition movement.

French foreign minister Alain Juppe visited Cairo on Sunday, offering whatever support was needed.

"As I said upon my arrival, I did not come here with ready-made solutions or advice to be followed. Quite simply to say that France is ready to help," he said.

Some analysts are comparing the attack on secret police headquarters to the storming of the Bastille and it looks likely that the fall-out from the weekend's events will be felt for some time to come.

WikiLeaks has started posting online what it says are images of some of the documents seized by protesters at the weekend.

WikiLeaks says it is also offering to help the activists reconstruct shredded files. The organisation claims to have the world's best shredder reconstruction team on hand.

World Cup History Rewritten by Kevin O'Brien at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore

A strongly-built allrounder, Kevin O'Brien is the brother of Ireland's first-choice wicketkeeper, Niall, and has been a regular part of the team since his ODI debut in 2006. He set an impressive benchmark in just his fifth ODI with 142 against Kenya and although by September 2010 he hadn't added another hundred he was a consistent scorer who often closed out innings. His medium-pace seam has the knack of breaking partnerships and he did enough to catch the eye of English counties where he had a spell with Nottinghamshire in 2009.

The first player in the world to score 100 runs in 50 balls in World cups.

His all-round versatility played key role in various situations and, with the bat he changed the innings. Kevin O'Brien has made history for Ireland.
They have the highest run chase in World Cup history and have turned over their old enemy.
